New Impersonation Scam
There is a concerning new scam that’s been reported in our community. In this scheme, scammers are pretending to be from the sheriff’s department, falsely claiming that there’s an arrest warrant issued in the victim’s name. They demand immediate payment to avoid arrest and instruct victims to deposit money at Coinstar machines located in Albertsons or to purchase Bitcoin for “bond” payments.
What’s alarming is that these scammers are conducting preliminary research to make their claims more convincing. They may even know personal details, such as your former last name, to sound more credible.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Do not engage with the caller or provide any personal or financial information.
- Verify any claims with local authorities before taking any action.
- Report any suspicious calls or messages to your local police department.
Remember, legitimate authorities will not ask for payments through unconventional methods like Bitcoin or Coinstar deposits. Stay cautious and protect yourself from these fraudulent schemes.
